Hockey memorabilia stolen after funeral

MONTREAL, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- Montreal police say they are watching hockey memorabilia Web sites following the theft of jerseys and other items from the widow of NHL Coach Pat Burns.

Just hours after the Monday funeral for the legendary coach, thieves smashed a window of Line Burns's car, stealing 30 autographed NHL jerseys, which were to be auctioned to raise money for an arena in Stanstead, Quebec, recently named after her husband, Canadian Broadcasting Corp. News reported.

Police say they will be on the lookout if anyone tries to sell the items, including on the black market.

"The investigators will look at all of the places where those jerseys could be found," Police Constable Raphael Bergeron said. "The investigators will look on different Web sites where they could have been placed. We're going to look in different places and different stores in Montreal."

Police issued a public appeal to the thieves to leave the stolen items somewhere safe for police to recover them.

"To give [the items] back to the family, that's the most important thing right now," Bergeron said. "Obviously we hope to solve the case, but what we want first is to get those items back for the family."

Anyone buying the items could face criminal charges, he said.

"They could also be facing charges of possession of stolen goods if they buy them and they get arrested in possession of [them]," he said.
