NEW YORK, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Philadelphia's Roy Halladay, who led the major leagues in wins, was the unanimous choice for the Cy Young Award as the top pitcher in the National League.

Halladay, a right-hander, was the first choice on each ballot of 32 Baseball Writers Association of America writers who voted for the award, it was announced Wednesday. It is his second Cy Young Award. He won in 2003 while with the Toronto Blue Jays. Halladay is the fifth pitcher to win the honor in both leagues.

Adam Wainwright of the St. Louis Cardinals was second in the voting.

Halladay, 33, led the major leagues in wins with 21 and had four shutouts, nine complete games and 250 2/3 innings pitched, which also topped the majors. He was second in the National League in strikeouts (219) and third in earned run average (2.44).

Halladay's season was highlighted by a perfect game on May 29. He also threw a no-hitter during the playoffs but voting for the Cy Young Award had been completed before that game.

He is the fourth member of the Phillies to win the Cy Young Award. Steve Carlton won the honor four times (1972, '77, '80 and '82) while John Deny won in 1983 and Steve Bedrosian in 1987.
