LUXEMBOURG, Oct. 24 (UPI) -- Unseeded Roberta Vinci beat No. 8-seeded Julia Goerges in straight sets Sunday in claiming the championship of the Luxembourg Open tennis tournament.

Vinci dropped just one set during the week and Sunday battled through a tough match with Goerges for a 6-3, 6-4 win over an hour and a half.

The match promised to be close. Both had played well in getting to the finals and Goerges was ranked 44th and Vinci 45th in the world.

Goerges fired eight aces and forced 13 break-point situations on Vinci. But the Italian player was able to fend off 11 of them while cashing in four of the seven break-point chances she had.

Vinci lost only nine points on serve in taking the first set and was able to win 62 percent of the points on serve in the second set despite landing fewer than half of her first serves.

The Luxembourg Open title was the third WTA championship for Vinci but first since April 2009. She collected $37,000 for the win. Goerges, who won her first title in July, fell to 1-1 in tournament finals. She took home $19,000.
