The Belgian star also won the U.S. Open in 2005 before skipping the event from 2006 to 2008, making her the first women's player to take the crown in three straight appearances since Chris Evert won four in a row from 1975 through 1978.

The seventh-seeded Zvonareva went down to defeat in her second Grand Slam final of the year. The Russian also fell at the Wimbledon final in July.
