Federer bests determined Fish in Cincy

CINCINNATI, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Roger Federer went to three sets Sunday to turn back a determined Mardy Fish and win the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters tournament.

The Swiss superstar downed the American wild card 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 in a final that featured a pair of tiebreakers and numerous momentum changes on the hard courts at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Cincinnati.

Fish fired 17 aces and went 4-of-5 on break point saves, but Federer counted with 11 aces of his own and won 77 percent of his first serves to claim his fourth Cincinnati title -- the former world No. 1 also took the key U.S. Open tune-up in 2005, '07 and '09.

With the win, the Swiss superstar joined Mats Wilander as the only players in the Open Era to win four titles at the event.

The 28-year-old Fish came close to upsetting Federer for the second straight match against him. The American won their last meeting in the semifinals of the Indian Wells tourney in March 2008.
