Johnson wins first pole of the year

BRISTOL, Tenn., Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Four-time defending Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson won his first pole of the year Friday at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Johnson turned a lap around the half-mile oval in 123.475 mph and will start out front Saturday night in the IRWIN Tools race.

He has won 24 poles in his Sprint Cup career but he has not been up to his usual form this year -- one that has him in fifth place in the points standings.

Carl Edwards qualified second in 122.937 mph, followed by Joey Logano, Tony Stewart and David Reutimann.

Points leader Kevin Harvick will start 28th.
