MLB: Philadelphia 10, LA Dodgers 9

PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Carlos Ruiz completed a stunning comeback with a two-run double in the ninth inning Thursday, giving Philadelphia a 10-9 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Dodgers owned a 9-2 lead going into the bottom of the eighth, but the Phillies scored four times in that inning and produced four more in the ninth. Four Los Angeles pitchers worked during the final two innings and they combined to retire just three batters.

Los Angeles closer Jonathan Broxton came on to start the ninth and loaded the bases by hitting Placido Polanco with a pitch and walking both Mike Sweeney and Jayson Werth.

Ben Francisco then hit a grounder to third baseman Casey Blake, who committed a fielding error that allowed two runs to score.

With Werth on second and Francisco on first, Ruiz hit a 1-1 pitch to deep center for a double that scored both runners.

Werth also singled home two runs in the eighth, Francisco had an RBI double in the inning and Wilson Valdez drove in the fourth run of the frame with a single.

The bullpen collapse ruined a strong showing by Los Angeles starter Clayton Kershaw, who limited the Phillies to two runs over 6 2/3 innings. The Dodgers also wasted a four-RBI performance by Matt Kemp, who had a two-run single in the first and a two-run homer in the seventh.
