SEATTLE, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Felix Hernandez threw eight shutout innings to win a pitching duel against Brett Anderson Tuesday and lead the Seattle Mariners to a 2-0 victory over Oakland.
Hernandez (8-9) limited the A's to five hits and struck out a career-high 13 batters to end his personal four-game losing streak and improve the Mariners to 2-0 under interim Manager Daren Brown.
Three of the five Oakland hits came in the first inning but a timely double play prevented the A's from scoring.
Franklin Gutierrez and Casey Kotchman drove in the two Seattle runs and had two hits apiece.
Anderson (3-3) allowed one run on five hits and walked two in seven innings.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when Kotchman drove in Ichiro Suzuki with a two-out single. Seattle added its second run in the eighth with three consecutive hits off reliever Craig Breslow, including Gutierrez's RBI base hit.
