MLB: Tampa Bay 8, Detroit 0

DETROIT, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Jeremy Hellickson pitched seven scoreless innings in his second major league start Tuesday and the Tampa Bay Rays pounded Detroit 8-0.

Hellickson (2-0) followed up a victory in his first career start this month with an even better effort Tuesday, shutting down the Tigers on three hits, walking none and striking out seven.

Evan Longoria collected two hits and drove in a run and Jason Bartlett went 3-for-5 as the Rays scored twice on Detroit errors and three times on bases-loaded walks.

The Rays won their three-game series from Detroit with the victory and temporarily pulled to within a game of the New York Yankees in the American League West, pending the outcome of the Yankees' game at Texas.

Detroit starter Max Scherzer (7-9) pitched well in defeat, allowing only one earned run on four hits in seven innings.
