Stricker repeats as John Deere champion

SILVIS, Ill., July 11 (UPI) -- Steve Stricker earned his second straight John Deere Classic victory Sunday, firing a 1-under 70 to best Paul Goydos by two shots.

Stricker's ninth career PGA Tour championship came after he set the PGA Tour 54-hole scoring record Saturday. He cooled off considerably Sunday, carding his worst round of the week, but still managed to hang on for the win at 26-under 258.

It was Stricker's second victory of the season. He also took the Northern Trust Open in February.

Goydos challenged Stricker but came up short, becoming just the second player in PGA Tour history to shoot a 59 and still lose the tournament. He faltered on the 18th when he hit the water, closing with a bogey to finish two strokes at minus-24 with a round of 66.

Jeff Maggert (70) was a distant third at 20-under 264. Shaun Michael (67) ended at minus-19, settling for fourth place, and Matt Jones shot a 70 Sunday to claim fifth place at minus-17 267.
