BOSTON, June 24 (UPI) -- U.S. figure skater and former Olympic gold medalist Scott Hamilton is doing well after brain surgery to remove a benign tumor, a spokesman said Thursday.
Hamilton, 51, who was one of America's biggest stars at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia, where he won the gold medal, is "resting comfortably," the spokesman told People magazine.
"The priority is for him to rest and recover so he can get home to his boys (Aidan, age 6, and Maxx, 2)," the spokesman said.
The surgery to prevent the recurrence of a benign tumor near his pituitary gland was performed Wednesday.
Hamilton, who battled testicular cancer in 1997, discovered the tumor in 2004 and had it removed by radiation. If left untreated, it could have caused him to go blind, doctors said.
Hamilton is expected to return home next week.
