MADRID, May 30 (UPI) -- Luke Donald's eagle on the 16th hole Sunday paced the Briton to a 5-under-par 67 round and a 1-stroke win at the Madrid Masters tournament.
Donald out-dueled co-third round leader Rhys Davies and Francesco Molinari down the stretch to claim the Madrid crown, finishing at 21-under 267.
It was Donald's first championship since the 2006 Honda Classic on the PGA Tour.
His eagle on the 16th separated him from a tie with Molinari atop the leaderboard. The Italian then bogeyed the closing hole, a miscue that effectively put him out of the hunt. Molinari (68) finished third at 18-under 270 at the Club de Campo course.
Davies (68) finished second at minus-20. He needed to make up ground on the 18th hole to force a playoff with Donald, but his try for a birdie putt ran almost 4 feet past the hole.
Graeme McDowall (65) ended in fourth at minus-17, while Robert Rock registered a four-under 68 to finish fifth at 15-under 273.
