NHL: Philadelphia 6, Montreal 0

PHILADELPHIA, May 16 (UPI) -- Michael Leighton turned aside 28 shots Sunday and the Philadelphia Flyers pounded Montreal 6-0 in the first game of their Eastern Conference finals series.

Leighton notched his first career playoff shutout and improved to 3-0 in the post-season in backstopping the red-hot Flyers to their fifth straight playoff win.

Philadelphia got a goal and an assist each from Braydon Coburn, Scott Hartnell, James van Riemsdyk, Claude Giroux and Danny Briere in the lopsided win over the eighth-seeded Canadiens.

Simon Gagne also scored for the Flyers, who will try to take a 2-0 series lead in Tuesday's Game 2 at home.

Canadiens goalie Jaroslav Halak was shelled for four goals on only 14 shots before being replaced by Carey Price midway through the second period. Price finished with nine saves in Montreal's loss, its worst in a playoff series opener since 1919.
