MLB: Florida 2, NY Mets 1

MIAMI, May 13 (UPI) -- Cody Ross dashed home from third base on a wild pitch with one out in the ninth inning Thursday, giving Florida a 2-1 victory over the New York Mets.

Fernando Nieve (1-2) was trying to get out of a ninth-inning jam after he had put runners on first and third. With Dan Uggla at the plate, however, Nieve uncorked the fifth wild pitch he has thrown in 81 major league appearances.

The miscue ended what had been an outstanding duel between starters Johan Santana of the Mets and Josh Johnson of the Marlins.

Santana did not allow an earned run in seven innings, striking out five and giving up six hits. Johnson was touched for only a run on three hits in seven frames and he struck out seven.

Rod Barajas drove in a run with a single in the New York second and San Diego tied it an inning later on an RBI base hit by Chris Coughlan.

Leo Nunez (2-0), the third Florida pitcher, worked the top of the ninth and collected the victory.
