ESTORIL, Portugal, May 5 (UPI) -- World No. 1 Roger Federer rolled into the quarterfinals of the $589,000 Estoril Open clay-court tennis tournament in Portugal with a straight-set win Wednesday.

Federer, who won the event two years ago, defeated Bjorn Phau 6-3, 6-4 in workmanlike fashion. Federer dropped his first clay-court match of the year last week to Ernests Gulbis, but Wednesday lost only five points on serve -- all in one game -- in the first set.

He only got 48 percent of his first serves in, which led to him winning more points on second serves than his first, but he still won three-quarters of the points on serve.

Federer draws Arnaud Clement in Friday's quarterfinals. Clement advanced with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Alejandro Falla in a match in which he didn't face a break point. The victory was the 300th singles match win of Clement's 14-year ATP career.

Another quarterfinal was set when fourth-seeded and defending champion Albert Montanes ran over Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-1, 6-2, and No. 8-seeded Pablo Cuevas slipped past Marcel Granollers 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (7-2).

Montanes was on the court just 56 minutes, collecting four service breaks.
