While Dementieva had an easy time in the second round, No. 4-seeded Alisa Kleybanova needed to rally to advance. Kleybanova was on the court nearly three hours in a 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-4 win over Alla Kudryavtseva.

Also Wednesday, Ayumi Morita stopped Zi Yan 6-2, 6-1 and Anastasia Rodionova was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Ekaterina Ivanova. Both of those matches took just more than an hour.

Rodionova will go against Kleybanova in the next round but none of the other matches for Friday's quarterfinals have been set.

The tournament continues through Sunday when the champion will collect $37,000.
