Chicago had a 1-0 lead after one period, but Backes tied it with 8:16 to go in the second off a feed from Paul Kariya. A power-play goal by Backes with 1:31 left in the stanza put the Blues in front and Jay McClement tipped in a shot by Roman Polak with 22 seconds remaining.

Marian Hossa brought Chicago within a goal by scoring shorthanded 4:16 into the third, but Mason was perfect the rest of the way. He had allowed 14 goals in his previous five games.

Cristobal Huet took the loss, giving up three goals on just 19 shots. The Blackhawks have dropped two in a row.
