Ovechkin selected NHL's No. 1 star

NEW YORK, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Washington left wing Alex Ovechkin amassed 10 points in four games and was selected the No. 1 star of the week by the National Hockey League.

The league each Monday picks three players for its weekly honors. Joining Ovechkin for games played Jan. 11-17 are St. Louis goaltender Chris Mason and Minnesota left wing Guillaume Latendresse.

Ovechkin reached the 30-goal mark for the fifth consecutive season when he connected on a penalty shot Sunday against Philadelphia but he also had seven assists on the week. He had four assists and a goal Friday and has more assists (34) than goals (30).

For the season, Ovechkin owns a plus-28 rating, the best mark in the NHL.

Mason won three times last week, allowing just two goals. He notched a 1-0 shutout versus Minnesota.

Latendresse totaled four points in a game against Pittsburgh and finished the week with a hat trick in Phoenix.
