Westwood wins in Dubai

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Lee Westwood fired an 8-under-par 64 Sunday and ran away from the field in winning the European PGA Tour's Dubai World Championship.

Westwood won $1.25 million for the tournament title and a bonus of $1.5 million for finishing on top of the European Tour's money list.

He had eight birdies -- five on the first seven holes -- in the final round and ended up at 23-under 265, six strokes ahead of runner-up Ross McGowan. Rory McIlroy was third at 15-under while Padraig Harrington and Geoff Ogilvy tied for fourth at minus-14.

Westwood's 64 was the round of the tournament and came on the heels of a 66 Saturday that put him two strokes ahead after three rounds.

"I'm a bit speechless," Westwood said. "I played fantastic at the weekend, I played well at the start of the week, but 66 and 64 will take some catching."

He opened his final round with a par but then had back-to-back birdies. After a par at No. 4, he put together three consecutive birdies and finished the front nine in 31. He played solidly on the back nine, getting birdies at 10, 12 and 15 and then three straight pars to finish off the win.
