It took Ottawa just 43 seconds to take the lead, which the Senators did on a slap shot by Alexei Kovalev. Jarkko Ruutu made it a 2-0 game less than two minutes later, but Atlanta had it tied up before the end of the opening period.

With Anssi Salmela in the penalty box for hooking, Fisher broke the tie with a backhander that beat Ondrej Pavelec.

Pavelec, Atlanta's No. 1 goaltender after being a backup the last two seasons, gave up all four goals on 34 shots.

Chris Neil provided insurance for the Senators 5:12 into the third by scoring on a wrist shot.

Brian Elliott, appearing in goal for the first time this season, made 26 saves to get the win.
