MLB: LA Angels 9, Chicago White Sox 5

CHICAGO, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- A two-run homer by Jeff Mathis was the first of four home runs hit by the LA Angels Thursday in a 9-5 win over the Chicago White Sox.

Mathis had two hits and his fifth homer gave Los Angeles a 4-0 lead in the second. Vladimir Guerrero, Erick Aybar and Bobby Abreu hit solo homers.

Aybar had three hits and two RBI and Juan Rivera had two hits and one RBI for the Angels, who averted a three-game sweep.

Winner Ervin Santana (4-6) surrendered four runs and five hits in six innings with five walks and seven strikeouts.

Chicago got a three-run homer from Jayson Nix, a pinch-hit solo homer from Dewayne Wise and one RBI from Mark Kotsay. Chris Getz had two hits for the White Sox, who had won five of six.

The losing pitcher was starter John Danks (9-8).
