MLB: Los Angeles Dodgers 5, Atlanta 0

ATLANTA, July 31 (UPI) -- Jason Schmidt combined with three relievers on a three-hitter Friday and Andre Ethier drove in four runs, carrying the Los Angeles Dodgers past Atlanta 5-0.

After losing three games in a row for the first time all season, the Dodgers have bounced back with two straight wins.

Schmidt (2-1), trying to come back from two shoulder operations that have sidelined him most of the last three seasons, allowed only one hit through six innings. He walked five, however, and put two base runners on in three different frames.

Ramon Troncosco relieved Schmidt in the seventh and allowed back-to-back singles to start the inning. George Sherrill -- who joined the Dodgers Friday after they acquired him in a trade with Baltimore Thursday -- came on to escape the jam with three consecutive strkeouts, and James McDonald worked the eighth and ninth in a non-save situation.

Ethier broke a scoreless tie with a three-run homer in the fifth and added an RBI single in the ninth.

Tommy Hanson (5-2) surrendered the Ethier homer and gave up eight hits in six innings.
