Allen victorious in Champions debut

BEACHWOOD, Ohio, May 24 (UPI) -- Michael Allen, who never won in 334 PGA Tour events, shot a 3-under-par 67 and captured the Senior PGA Championship Sunday in his Champions Tour debut.

Allen, 50, finished at 6-under 274 at the Canterbury Golf Club in Beachwood, Ohio, good for a two-shot victory in one of the major events on the 50-and-over tour.

"It's been a great week," Allen said.

Larry Mize (67) was second at 276, Bruce Fleisher (67) third at 277 and Tom Watson (66) placed fourth.

Allen slammed a 315-yard drive on the final hole, hit his approach to within 12 feet and sank the birdie putt.

"To hit a drive like that on 18 under the gun in awfully impressive," Mize said.

Allen, who won $360,000, is the14th player to win his debut on the Champions Tour.
