ST. LOUIS, May 5 (UPI) -- St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Rick Ankiel was released from the hospital Tuesday, the morning after he crashed violently into the outfield wall.
Ankiel ran into the left-center field wall in the eighth inning of Monday's 6-1 loss to Philadelphia. He had an MRI exam Tuesday afternoon that showed a deep contusion and bruising of his right shoulder. The exam showed no structural damage and his playing status remains day-to-day.
Ankiel sprinted and caught a drive off the bat of Philadelphia's Pedro Feliz on the dead run before crashing into the wall. His face struck the padding first, and he tumbled to the ground, where the ball fell out. He stayed on the ground for awhile, was strapped to a precautionary neck brace and carted off the field.
The umpire ruled the play a catch.
In 24 games this season, Ankiel is batting .247 with two home runs and 11 RBI.
