Tom Gordon (0-1), the first pitcher out of the Arizona bullpen, walked Bill Hall to open the seventh. Hall moved up on a wild pitch, went to third on Jason Kendall's single and was thrown out trying to score on Craig Counsell's grounder to first.

Kendall and Counsell then advanced on another wild pitch, after which a single by Rickie Weeks scored Kendall with the tying run. Corey Hart next drew a walk, bringing in Juan Gutierrez to relieve Gordon.

Gutierrez recorded a strikeout and was relieved by Scott Schoeneweis, who immediately walked Fielder to force in the go-ahead tally. A double by Mike Cameron, his third hit of the game, drove in the final two runs of the inning.

Mark DiFelice (2-0) threw just seven pitches and retired two batters in the seventh to get the win. Trevor Hoffman earned his second save.
