NHL: N.Y. Islanders 3, Pittsburgh 2 (SO)

UNIONDALE, Pa., Feb. 16 (UPI) -- Jeff Tambellini scored the winning goal in the shootout Monday to lead the New York Islanders to a 3-2 win over Pittsburgh.

After each club scored in the first round, Tambellini opened the second with a slapshot to put the Islanders ahead. Evgeni Malkin followed with an unsuccessful attempt, and then Kyle Okposo didn't release a shot on his chance.

Chris Campoli and Frans Nielsen scored in regulation for the Islanders, who were able to halt a five-game losing streak. Joey MacDonald stopped 35 shots for his 12th win of the season and first since Dec. 31.

Evgeni Malkin and Ryan Whitney scored for the Penguins, who were playing their first game under interim head Coach Dan Bylsma, who took over when Michel Therrien was fired late Sunday.

Marc-Andre Fleury made 28 saves in defeat for Pittsburgh, which has lost three of their last four.
