NHL: Buffalo 6, San Jose 5 (SO)

BUFFALO, N.Y., Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Derek Roy's goal in the fifth round of the shootout Friday night ended a wild battle and gave the Buffalo Sabres a 6-5 victory over San Jose.

The Sabres appeared headed for an easy win after taking a 3-0 lead in the first period, but then fell behind 5-4 and seemed certain to lose the game as the final moments of regulation ticked away.

Buffalo's Jason Pominville, however, scored with 4 seconds to play in the third period -- forging a 5-5 tie.

Neither side could score during the first three shootout rounds, but both teams produced a goal in the fourth round -- Patrick Marleau for San Jose and Pominville for the Sabres.

Roy then ended it, getting a shot past Evgeni Nabokov that allowed Buffalo to halt a two-game skid.

Both Nabokov and Ryan Miller allowed five goals on 35 shots during three periods and overtime.

In addition to scoring the shootout goal, Roy produced a power-play tally with 5:39 to go in the first period that gave Buffalo a 3-0 advantage. San Jose eventually fell behind 4-1 before producing four unanswered goals. Joe Pavelski gave San Jose a 5-4 advantage with 9:46 to go in regulation.
