NHL: Tampa Bay 5, Buffalo 3

TAMPA, Fla., Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Cory Murphy, two days after being picked up off waivers, delivered a goal and an assist Wednesday, helping Tampa Bay defeat Buffalo 5-3.

Murphy scored the final goal of the game, a power-play tally that came just 6 seconds from the end of the second period.

Mike Smith turned in a perfect third period while making nine of his 31 saves.

The Lightning had lost to Buffalo seven straight times in Tampa.

Tampa Bay never trailed and took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals just 34 seconds apart by Steve Eminger and Steve Downie. The goal by Downie came on a tip-in of a shot by Murphy.

Derek Roy scored twice for the Sabres, who had a three-game winning streak snapped.
