PURCHASE, N.Y., Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Former New York Knicks president and head coach Isiah Thomas was taken to a hospital after overdosing on prescription drugs, sources say.
Police rushed to the former NBA star's mansion in Purchase, N.Y., Friday after he reportedly had taken 10 sleeping pills, the New York Daily News said citing unnamed sources.
Without confirming Thomas was the victim, authorities said the 47-year-old man they removed from the home was unconscious but breathing on his own, and that it appeared the overdose was accidental rather than deliberate.
"Maybe the guy took a couple of pills, couldn't go to sleep, took a couple more, couldn't go to sleep -- who knows?" said Harrison, N.Y., Police Chief David Hall.
Thomas's son Joshua, 20, told the Daily News reports of a sleeping pill overdose were false.
Isiah Thomas's reputation as one the NBA's greatest players from his years with the Detroit Pistons took a beating when the Knicks sank into mediocrity on the court during his tenure as coach and team president. Last year, a Manhattan jury ruled Thomas had sexually harassed a female team executive. He was fired, but remains with the team as a consultant.
