MLB: Philadelphia 8, Washington 4

PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Ryan Howard got Philadelphia going with a three-run homer Friday and the Phillies clinched a share of the NL Eastern Division title by defeating Washington 8-4.

Philadelphia's victory, combined with a loss by the New York Mets, moved Philadelphia two games in front of the Mets with two games to play. One Philadelphia win during the weekend, or one New York loss, would give the Phillies their second division crown in as many years.

If the teams finish the regular-season tied and both earn playoff spots, the Mets would become division champions because they captured the season series with Philadelphia. If there is a tie and only the division title-holder will make the playoffs, a one-game showdown would take place to determine the pennant winner.

Howard's homer came in the first inning and Philadelphia scored four more times in the second on Chase Utley's three-run double and an RBI double from Howard.

The Phillies held on thanks to a five-hit effort over six innings by Joe Blanton (9-12). Only one of the four runs allowed by Blanton was earned.

Losing pitcher Collin Balester (3-7) retired only five batters while giving up seven runs on seven hits.

Philadelphia halted a two-game losing streak and handed the Nationals their 100th loss of the season.
