NFL: Kansas City 21, St. Louis 17

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Kolby Smith ran for two touchdowns in the first period Thursday and the Kansas City Chiefs held on to defeat St. Louis 21-17 in a pe-season contest.

The game was delayed at the start for 90 minutes by severe thunderstorms.

Smith scored on runs of 14 and four yards to give the Chiefs a 14-3 lead and Damon Huard added to the advantage by hitting Bobby Sippio with an 11-yard pass early in the second period.

St. Louis cut its deficit on a Brock Berlin-to-Dane Looker pass of 20 yards with 10 seconds left in the half. Lance Ball scored on a two-yard run on the second play of the fourth quarter that brought the Rams within four, but their three remaining possessions ended with two punts and an interception.

The Rams (2-2) will begin their season in Philadelphia and the Chiefs (2-2) start out at New England.
