BOSTON, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Roy Halladay came within three outs of a complete game shutout Saturday when the Toronto Blue Jays recorded a 4-1 win over the Boston Red Sox.
The right-hander had pitched eight scoreless innings entering the bottom of the ninth, but his shutout attempt ended when Dustin Pedroia launched his 11th home run this season to lead off the home half of the inning.
Toronto's Alex Rios hit two homers, good for three RBI. Adam Lind hit a solo shot in the sixth. Like Rios, Joe Inglett and Marco Scutaro had two hits for the Blue Jays, who have won four of their last five games.
Halladay (14-9) gave up seven hits while going the distance.
Jason Bay had two of the seven hits for the Red Sox, whose four-game winning streak ended.
Losing pitcher Paul Byrd (0-1), making his first start since he was acquired from Cleveland this week, surrendered four earned runs and 10 hits in 7 1/3 innings.
