COLORADO SPRINGS, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- American swimmer Jessica Hardy withdrew from the Olympic swimming team Friday after testing positive for a banned substance.

The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) had announced that Hardy tested positive for clenbuterol during the U.S. Olympic trials on July 4.

She chose not to appeal the decision.

Hardy qualified for the Beijing Games in both the 100-meter breaststroke and 50-meter freestyle. She also would have been a member of the American 400-meter freestyle relay team, where she almost certainly would have won a medal.

Rebecca Soni will join the team in the breaststroke and Kara Lynn Joyce will swim the freestyle.
