Youkilis -- a Cincinnati native in his fifth major league season, but making his first big league appearance in his hometown -- added an RBI single in the sixth.

One run scored on Paul Bako's second-inning throwing error, one scored on Edinson Volquez's fourth-inning wild pitch, while three players had two hits for the Red Sox, who have won five of their last seven games.

Boston closer Jonathan Papelbon (3-2) gave up a two-strike, two-out solo home run to Edwin Encarnacion in the bottom of the ninth but still managed to get the victory.

Craig Hansen earned his first major league save.

Cincinnati's Adam Dunn and Brandon Phillips homered and both Phillips and Encarnacion had two hits for the Reds, who had won two in a row.
