NHL: Philadelphia 2, Washington 0

WASHINGTON, April 13 (UPI) -- Marty Biron's first playoff shutout Sunday backstopped Philadelphia's 2-0 win over Washington that evened their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series at 1-1.

Biron was helped offensively by first-period goals from R.J. Umberger and Jeff Carter on odd-man rushes while a stingy defense again shut down high-scoring, left wing Alexander Ovechkin.

Ovechkin had scored the game-winner Friday when the Capitals opened with a 5-4 victory.

Biron made 24 saves to help the Flyers go home with a win.

Ovechkin took five shots on goal, the best coming on the power play in the first period, but Biron kicked away his slap shot in the first minute and withstood the pressure he faced the entire contest.

Christobal Huet yielded both goals on 41 shots for the Capitals, whose seven-game-winning streak ended.
