MLB: San Diego 3, Houston 2

SAN DIEGO, April 3 (UPI) -- Tadahito Iguchi singled in the go-ahead run in the seventh Thursday and the San Diego Padres held on to down Houston 3-2.

The Padres took three games in a four-game, season-opening series with the Astros, and missed a chance for a sweep when Trevor Hoffman blew a save opportunity Wednesday.

Randy Wolf, who signed with San Diego as a free agent during the winter, gave up a run on four hits with five strikeouts over six innings. The win, however, went to reliever Enrique Gonzalez (1-0).

Gonzalez gave up the tying run in the top of the seventh, but got the victory thanks to Iguchi's RBI in the bottom half. Hoffman was called upon for the third time in the series and worked a perfect ninth to record his second save.

Kevin Kouzmanoff contributed a two-run homer for the Padres and Scott Hairston fell a home run short of the cycle.

Iguchi's game-winning hit came off reliever Oscar Villarreal (0-1).
