NEW YORK, April 3 (UPI) -- Bobby Abreu completed a New York rally with a go-ahead single in the eighth Thursday, giving the Yankees a 3-2 victory over Toronto.
New York came back from a 2-0 deficit, with Abreu delivering two of the Yankees' six hits. Billy Traber, Brian Bruney, Joba Chamberlain and Mariano Rivera teamed to pitch three innings of shutout relief, with Chamberlain (1-0) getting the win.
Toronto left the would-be tying run stranded at third base in the ninth.
Melky Cabrera singled to open the New York eighth and Scott Downs came on to replace Brian Wolfe (0-1) for the Blue Jays.
Johnny Damon laid down a sacrifice bunt, but Downs could not pick it up cleanly along the first base line and both runners were safe.
The runners moved up on Derek Jeter's sacrifice and Abreu then drove in Cabrera with a bloop single.
Rivera, who earned his second save of the season, gave up a leadoff single in the ninth and the runner eventually reached third with two away. Rivera then struck out Aaron Hill looking to end the game.
New York took two out of three in the season-opening series.
