NHL: Washington 4, Carolina 1

WASHINGTON, April 1 (UPI) -- Alexander Ovechkin scored his 63rd goal of the season Tuesday, helping Washington beat Carolina 4-1and tie the Hurricanes for the Southeast Division lead.

Matt Cooke, Brooks Laich and Alexander Semin also scored for the Capitals, who have won five straight and nine of 10. Sergei Fedorov added a pair of assists, and Cristobal Huet made 21 saves in the win.

Scott Walker scored the lone goal for the Hurricanes, who have lost three of four and failed in a bid to clinch the Southeast title. Cam Ward allowed four goals on 39 shots and took the loss.

Both teams have 90 points with two games to play, but Carolina currently holds the tiebreaker with one more win than the Capitals.
