NHL: New Jersey 2, Washington 1 (OT)

WASHINGTON, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- John Madden scored the game-winner in overtime Sunday lifting the New Jersey Devils over the Washington Capitals 2-1 for their fifth straight victory.

Madden fired a missed shot past Washington netminder Brent Johnson for his 18th goal this season with 50 seconds left in the overtime.

New Jersey's Jamie Langenbrunner scored his 11th goal on a 5-on-3 power play 39 seconds into the third period to break a scoreless tie. Washington's Alexander Semin tied 1-1 it at 2:46 of the third.

Martin Brodeur, making his 22nd consecutive start, stopped 37 of 38 shots to continue his dominance against the Capitals. His career record against them rose to 32-11 with four ties.

Johnson stopped 29 of 31 shots for the Capitals, who have lost three in a row.

Washington's Alexander Ovechkin, the NHL's leading point-maker, has gone five games without a goal.
