Petrova ousted from Paris tournament

PARIS, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- Defending champion Nadia Petrova was a first-round upset victim Tuesday at the $600,000 Open Gaz de France tennis tournament in Paris.

Petrova, who entered the tournament seeded fifth, was ousted by Kateryna Bondarenko, 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-4.

The only other seeded player to have a match Tuesday was No. 7 Agnes Szavay, who had no trouble in a 6-1, 6-1 blitz of Olga Govortsova.

Also Tuesday, Dominika Cibulkova handled Camille Pin, 7-5, 6-3; Yuliana Fedak got past Karin Knapp, 7-6 (9-7), 4-6, 6-2; Petra Kvitova whipped Anabel Medina Garrigues, 6-2, 6-3; and Tathiana Garbin blew past American Meilen Tu, 6-3, 6-4.

Wednesday's second round will feature the first appearances by the tournament's top four seeds, who were given first-round byes. Anna Chakvetadze is the top seed for the 2008 Gaz de France.

The tournament final is set for Sunday with a match worth $95,500 to the winner.
