NHL: Atlanta 5, Carolina 4 (OT)

RALEIGH, N.C., Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Marian Hossa scored on the power play with 32 seconds remaining in overtime Wednesday, delivering Atlanta a 5-4 decision over Carolina.

The teams meet again Friday in Atlanta.

Carolina's Glen Wesley was sent to the penalty box with 65 seconds to go in the extra period for hooking. Hossa, in full stride, took a cross-ice pass from Ilya Kovaluchuk and slipped it by Cam Ward.

It was the third assist of the game for Kovalchuk, who also scored once. Mark Recchi added a goal and an assist in helping Atlanta win for the second time in three games. Johan Hedberg got the win with a 32-save performance.

Carolina overcame deficits of 1-0, 3-1 and 4-3. The Hurricanes got the final goal of regulation from Carolina's Erik Cole with 4:31 to play in the third.
