COL BKB: North Carolina 90, Kent State 61

CHAPEL HILL, N.C., Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Tyler Hansbrough scored 25 points Wednesday and No. 1 North Carolina pulled away in the second half to defeat Kent State 90-61.

Hansbrough made seven of 10 shots from the field and was perfect in 11 free throw attempts. North Carolina, which opens its conference season at Clemson Sunday, improved to 14-0.

Both Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington scored 17 points for the Tar Heels.

Kent State (10-3) was led by Haminn Quaintance with 20 points.

The Golden Flashes used a 13-3 run late in the first half to cut their deficit at the first break to 12 points. But North Carolina extended its advantage to 21 during the first eight minutes of the second period and the Tar Heels eventually built their lead to as many as 32 points.
