NHL: Washington 4, Ottawa 1

OTTAWA, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Viktor Kozlov had a goal and two assists Thursday night, as the Washington Capitals ended Ottawa's franchise-record eight-game winning streak, 4-1.

The Senators had been trying to become the first team in NHL history to win 14 of its first 15 games. Instead, Ottawa lost for the second time this season, with Ray Emery giving up four goals on 35 shots.

Washington had dropped its previous four games.

Tomas Fleischmann and Alexander Ovechkin also scored for the Capitals, while Nicklas Backstrom produced his first career goal. Olaf Kolzig made 27 saves to get the win.

Kozlov scored the first of Washington's three second-period goals with 7:50 remaining on a wrist shot that came while the teams skated four on four.

Kozlov then sent a pass from behind the net to Emery, who popped the puck into the air. Backstrom tapped it into the net for his milestone goal.

Daniel Alfredsson scored Ottawa's only goal with 71 seconds remaining in the second period to make it 3-1.
