NHL: Carolina 5, Washington 0

RALEIGH, N.C., Nov. 5 (UPI) -- Cory Stillman put together a hat trick in a span of 7:05 of the first period Monday as the Carolina Hurricanes breezed past the Washington Capitals 5-0.

Eric Staal scored the Hurricanes' other two goals. Cam Ward blocked 35 shots for his third career shutout, all against Washington. Stillman also had an assist and extended his points streak to eight games for the Hurricanes, who won for the fifth time in seven games.

Matt Cullen and Ray Whitney each added a pair of assists to extend their point streaks to nine and seven games, respectively.

Olaf Kolzig allowed five goals on 24 shots, while backup Brent Johnson stopped all nine shots he faced in relief for Washington, which is 2-9 since starting the season with three straight wins.
