Smyth -- who had an emotional return to Edmonton Tuesday night in his first game there since the Oilers traded him to the New York Islanders last season -- tipped in a shot by Joe Sakic for the game-winning goal.

Sakic opened the scoring at 7:27 of the first period, but Calgary took a 2-1 lead on goals by Alex Tanguay late in the first period and Matthew Lombardi early in the second.

Colorado tied it at 2-2 with 4:15 to play in the third on a power-play goal by Marek Svatos.

Calgary fell to 3-2 on a seven-game home stand.

Colorado's Jose Theodore made 39 saves, as the Avalanche defeated the Flames for the sixth straight time.
