BANGKOK, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Italy's Flavia Pennetta topped Chan Yung-Jan of Chinese Taipei in straight sets Sunday to win the Bangkok Open Tennis Tournament.
The scores were 6-1, 6-3.
After a lengthy rain delay before the match unfolded, the seventh-seeded Pennetta claimed her fourth career WTA singles crown and first since a tournament at Acapulco, Mexico, in 2005.
"I think it's one of the best wins of my career and gives me so much confidence to go out there and play so well," Pennetta said after six service breaks, three in each set, and a stunning win over former Wimbledon champion Venus Williams in Saturday's semifinals.
Her victory was worth $28,161.
The 18-year-old Chan was playing a WTA singles final for the first time in her brief career. She has four career doubles crowns, including three this season. Her best previous finish in singles play was a semifinal appearance at the 2006 Japan Open.
