PHOENIX, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- A seventh-inning home run by Mark Reynolds put Arizona in front Wednesday and the Diamondbacks opened the playoffs with a 3-1 win over the Chicago Cubs.
Brandon Webb, who had a 42-inning scoreless streak at one point in the season, allowed four hits over seven innings and got the win when the Diamondbacks broke open a tie game after Webb left for a pinch-hitter.
Carlos Marmol replaced Chicago starter Carlos Zambrano in the seventh and Reynolds greeted him with a deep blast to left-center on a 2-1 pitch.
With one out in the inning, Chris Synder drew a walk and raced to third on a double by Augie Ojeda. Snyder then scored on a sacrifice fly by Conor Jackson, who pinch hit for Webb.
Arizona took the lead in the fourth on a homer by J.D. Drew and the Cubs drew even in the sixth on a bases-loaded, infield single from Ryan Theriot.
Webb struck out nine and walked three before giving way to Brandon Lyon in the eighth. Jose Valverde gave up a two-out walk in the ninth, but earned the save.
The second game of the best-of-five series will be played Thursday night in Phoenix.
