Bartoli defeats defending champ

LUXEMBOURG CITY, Luxembourg, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Wimbledon runner-up Marion Bartoli beat defending Luxembourg titlist Alona Bondarenko in Tuesday's opening action at the Fortis Championships.

The fifth-seeded Frenchman defeated Bondarenko 6-3, 6-2. The Ukrainian Bondarenko beat Italian Francesca Schiavone in last year's finale.

Austrian Sybille Bammer beat countrywoman Tamira Paszek 6-0, 6-2; Russian Vera Zvonareva defeated German Julia Goerges 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-2; and Schiavone beat France's Nathalie Dechy 6-2, 6-3.
