NFL: Denver 23, Oakland 20 (OT)

DENVER, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Denver’s Jason Elam kicked a 23-yard field goal in overtime Sunday, as the Broncos beat the Oakland Raiders 23-20.

The kick, with 5:48 left in OT, was the second consecutive winning field goal for Elam and improved the Broncos to 2-0, while sending Oakland to its second defeat in as many games this season.

Broncos Coach Mike Shanahan had a direct hand in the outcome, calling a time-out as Oakland’s Sebastian Janikowski lined up for a 52-yard field goal that would have won the game. Janikowski nailed the kick but it was waved off by the officials when Shanahan got the time-out.

His second attempt hit the top of the left upright and gave Denver the ball for what turned into the winning drive.

Denver quarterback Jay Cutler went 23-of-33 for 269 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions. Travis Henry rushed for 128 yards on 26 carries while Javon Walker had eight catches for 101 yards.

The Raiders were led by Lamont Jordan, who ran for 159 yards. Josh McCown had a rough day with only 73 yards on 8-of-16 passing.
