ATLANTA, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Hal Sutton has been selected to receive the Payne Stewart Award for his successful golf career and charitable efforts off the course.
Sutton is a 14-time winner on the PGA Tour. Among those victories was the 1983 PGA Championship. He also helped establish the Christus Schumpert Sutton Children's Hospital in his hometown of Shreveport, La., and raised more than $2 million to help victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005.
"Hal Sutton has been a prominent member of the PGA Tour for many years and has always represented himself and the tour in a most professional manner," said PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem. "Hal selflessly has utilized his success as a golf professional to the benefit of our organization and countless individuals through his leadership and charitable work."
Sutton is the 10th person to win the Payne Stewart Award. Byron Nelson, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer shared the first award in 2000 and Gary Player was selected last year.
The award was established to honor Payne Stewart, who died in 1999.
